TikTok Shop Agency vs. In-House Brand Jobs: Which Should You Choose?

If you want to learn TikTok Shop fast, start at an agency. If you want to go deep on one brand and own its whole program long term, go in-house. Both are good careers; they just train different muscles. We're an agency, so read this knowing which side we're on. We've tried to be fair about where in-house wins. What changes between the two The core work is similar on both sides: recruiting creators, managing samples and commissions, improving content, reading sales data. What changes is how many brands you see, how fast the feedback comes, and how much of the business you touch. Scope: many brands vs. one At an agency you work across several brands at once, often in different categories. You see what sells for a skincare brand next to what sells for a supplement brand, and patterns jump out quickly. In-house, you own one brand's TikTok Shop program. You know its products, margins and customers far better than any agency person will, and you often sit closer to decisions on launches, pricing and inventory. Pace and feedback Agencies move fast because clients expect results every month and the agency has to prove its value constantly. You get a lot of feedback, quickly, from data across many campaigns. In-house pace depends on the company. Some brands move faster than any agency. Others have longer approval chains and more stakeholders between you and a decision. What you learn At an agency, you learn the platform: creator recruitment, sampling, commissions, content patterns and compliance, repeated across many brands. That volume is the main reason people start agency-side. In-house, you learn the business: how TikTok Shop fits next to Amazon, DTC and retail, how inventory and margins shape what you push, and how to work with finance, product and leadership. Tools and systems Agencies usually run on shared systems, SOPs and trackers built across many clients, which means you learn a proven way of running programs from day one. In-house teams are often building their TikTok Shop setup from scratch, which is great if you like building and harder if you need structure. Career path Agency careers tend to move from execution roles into managing rosters, then client-facing or team-lead roles. In-house careers tend to move toward owning the channel, then broader ecommerce or growth roles. Plenty of people do both. A common path is a few years at an agency to learn the platform, then moving in-house to own a program, or the reverse once someone wants more variety. Which one should you choose? An agency is probably the better start if you: • Are early in your career and want to learn TikTok Shop quickly • Like variety and get bored working on one product line • Want structure, playbooks and teammates doing the same job • Enjoy a fast pace and clear monthly results In-house is probably the better fit if you: • Already know the platform and want to own a full program • Care deeply about one category or brand • Want a seat closer to product, pricing and inventory decisions • Prefer depth over breadth Questions to ask in either interview Whichever way you lean, these questions tell you a lot about the job:

  1. How many brands or products would I work on?
  2. Who decides which creators we work with and what commission we offer?
  3. What tools and trackers does the team use today?
  4. How is success in this role measured each month?
  5. What did the last person in this role move on to? What agency life looks like at Creatify Creatify is a TikTok Shop partner agency working mostly with health and beauty brands. Each brand is run by a pod: a CSM, a Creator Manager and a Creator Coach. You get the breadth of agency work with clear ownership of one part of it. FAQs Is it better to work at a TikTok Shop agency or for a brand? Neither is better across the board. Agencies teach the platform faster across many brands; in-house roles go deeper on one brand and more of its business. Do agencies pay less than in-house roles? It varies by company, role and seniority, so compare specific offers rather than relying on general rules. Can I move from an agency to in-house later? Yes, and it's a common move. Agency experience across several brands is useful to in-house teams building their TikTok Shop program. Do in-house TikTok Shop teams work with agencies? Often. Many brands keep a small in-house team and use an agency for creator recruitment and management at scale. See open roles If the agency side sounds like your kind of pace, see open roles at Creatify.
